CNC Machine Operation

Enjoy this video of our CNC (computer numerical control) machine in operation. For almost 20 years, I dreamt of having one of these to speed up the production process, but never had the space or the budget.

We added this machine to our shop when we moved in 2021 and since that time we are witnessing an increase in our accuracy while the amount of time spent per sheet, decrease from nearly 25 minutes to about three minutes per sheet.

In a nutshell, our engineering team is making sure that the plans are accurate from the design perspective and then generating codes that run right from the computer to the machine. Then the project moves to a teammates who operates the machine, loads and unloads the raw wood material being cut, all while programming the computer.

Another advantage is that this machine has the capability of keeping our yield very good. Yield is a measurement of how much waste there is or is not. Our yield is much better than it was when we were cutting everything manually.

We invite any of our customers to see this machine in action, We would enjoy scheduling a time for you to come out and see how we produce our cabinetry.

Laser Measurements

I can remember a day when I used to have to make quartz and granite countertop templates (how we measure) by hand with small pieces of plywood and hot glue!

Today it’s all done with a computer. Here are a few pictures showing how it’s done. Notice the red laser dot and the small glass blocks in the one picture. Also it shows the camera and computer on a tripod

While this is super accurate and better, I still remember the days of “my trusty old tape measure”

We provide quartz and granite counters both for cabinetry projects we custom fabricate as well as projects for people looking to keep their existing cabinets but are looking for a facelift/ slight upgrade to compliment them, which is where a new countertop comes in.

With hundreds of options and many at a price point it is usually surprising to customers how affordable it really is.

Maintenance Matters

We have a large sander that a big percentage of The parts we make travel through. Every few years often, it requires some routine maintenance. This is a picture of the big drum which is called a contact drum. It’s where the sandpaper rides around a wheel to make sure that the parts going in are sized appropriately and are sanded appropriately.

To an old shop guy this is interesting but to others maybe it’s not :-)

Due to its size, this roller required two technicians to come in for about a half of a day to replace. This sander is so precise it sands in increments of five 1000s of an inch. This precision is what is required for our parts to be as accurate as they are. That’s why we call it custom!

Make a Statement!

We build and provide a lot of wood rangehoods for our clients who are looking for ventilation over their cooking surfaces that are attractive. The cooktops can vary from regular stove top, grill, gas, or electric.

Some clients want something very basic and others want something more elaborate. Here are a few examples of range hoods completed, but still in our shop waiting to be installed. The first set is a rangehood completed, but not yet painted.

The other example is one stained in a beautiful wood tone. And the final photo shows the impact of a range hood once it is installed in a kitchen. They can be quite a focal point in a newly remodeled kitchen.

Efficiency

Efficiency isn’t always glamorous!
Part of our manufacturing process requires us to move materials around the shop. For efficiency purposes (and to save on our backs!) we utilize rolling carts that can move material cut from our CNC machine to the assembly area. This first photo shows two our six cart loaded with parts ready to move on in the process. JG Custom Cabinetry manufactures our cabinet drawer boxes from 100% sold wood with dovetail construction, which tends to make them heavy so, we have learned this is a great way to move product around. We think it’s really important for the moving parts of cabinetry, (the drawers) should be solid wood. We are happy to report that due to our growth we just purchased three more of these handy carts.

The second photo shows boxes waiting to be put into the final assembly of cabinets.

One can also see an orange piece on the bottom, which are the undermount clips for the undermount, slow closing drawer slides that we use.

The third picture shows some cabinetry that is 90% done and staged for final completion the next business day. Our process in production works in a way that the doors and drawer faces get put on just before loading and shipping and this picture shows all of the cabinets lined up and ready for that last station.

While the production may not be glamorous, we are proud to say, the end results in our clients’ homes, is!
